Jennifer Mao is an artist and tinkerer based in Brooklyn, NY.  Her practice spans across weaving, natural dyeing, painting, and embroidery, with a focus on handmade processes.

Jennifer’s work explores the intersection of physical material and symbolic meaning within our everyday lives. She is interested in the open-ended possibilities of textiles, words, and images to serve as carriers of meaning, memory, and culture.

By utilizing words and images, Jennifer’s work explores the interplay between tactile material and theoretical possibility. Incorporation of language and photographs invites engagement into a broader conversation around how we draw and make connections between the objects we interact with and our lived experiences. In doing so, we must consider how the stories we tell ourselves illuminate our understanding of the world, our place within it, and the interconnected web of relationships that bind us together.
